SURRENDERING & ADOPTING A PARROT

WHEN YOU ARE DROPPING OFF YOUR BIRDS AT PARROT HAVEN...

  1. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE CAGE IS AS CLEAN AS YOU WOULD EXPECT IT TO BE IF YOU WERE RECEIVING AN ADOPTIVE BIRD.
Many owners drop off filthy, rusted cages, which I am not able to use and they go promptly into the garbage. Then I have to either spend an hour or two  scrubbing the cage clean, repaint, or purchase another cage that is decent and comfortable for the bird.
  2. PLEASE REMEMBER TO MAKE A REASONABLE TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION WHEN YOU DROP OFF YOUR BIRD.
Remember, it's another bird that needs to be cared for and cleaned up after.  No volunteer receives a salary and it does take about 4 hours a day to feed and clean the birds. Your bird.  The food bill alone is approximately $600 a month.  There are not enough donations to cover this expense, so I find myself working 2 jobs to support these birds.  So a donation is expected when you drop off your pet.
  3. WHILE I DON'T MIND TAKING A BIRD IN THAT NEEDS A HOME, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF YOU WOULD CONTRIBUTE SOMETHING TOWARDS THE FOOD, VET, TOY OR HOUSING EXPENSES INCURRED TO HELP KEEP PARROT HAVEN UP AND RUNNING.  REMEMBER IT IS YOUR BIRD THAT I WILL BE TAKING CARE OF.
  4. ADVANCE NOTICE IS REQUIRED BEFORE YOU DROP YHOUR BIRD OFF.  THERE MIGHT NOT BE AVAILABLE SPACE FOR YOUR BIRD.
  5. SOMEONE MIGHT NOT BE HOME WHEN YOU DROP OFF YOUR BIRD. I REALLY DON'T WANT TO COME HOME AND FIND IT IN A PAPER BAG ON MY DOOR STEP.  I'D ALSO LIKE TO OBTAIN INFORMATION  ABOUT YOUR BIRD.
  6. AN INFORMATION PACKET WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED, WITH THE BIRD'S NAME, AGE, MEDICAL HISTORY, REASON WHY IT WAS GIVEN UP. ANY INFO THAT  YOU CAN PROVIDE WILL ASSIST WITH TAKING BETTER CARE OF YOUR BIRD AND HELP US TO FIND THE BEST HOME POSSIBLE. REMEMBER, PARROT HAVEN IS ONLY A TEMPORARY HOUSING SITUATION UNTIL A FOREVER HOME CAN BE FOUND

.

FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING A PARROT, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO FILL OUT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION, MAKE A DONATION ONCE YOU RECIEVE YOUR BIRD AND PROVIDE REFERENCES. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO PICK UP YOUR PARROT LOCATED AT PARROT HAVEN ON LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK. I DO NOT SHIP BIRDS OUT OF STATE.

ADOPTING A BIRD IS NOT AN IMPULSE DECISION. THESE BIRDS LIVE A LONG TIME. UP TO 8O YEARS FOR AN AMAZON OR A MACAW. ADOPTING A LARGER BIRD, SUCH AS A MACAW OR COCKATOO, IS FOR THE EXPERIENCED BIRD LOVER. IF THIS WOULD BE YOUR FIRST BIRD, A COCKATIEL, CONURE OR  QUAKER MAY BE THE BIRD FOR YOU. I NEED TO KNOW YOUR LIFESTYLE SO THAT I CAN ASSIST YOU WITH THIS DECISION, FOR YOUR SAKE AND THE BIRDS' WELL BEING. I DON'T WANT THESE BIRDS GOING FROM HOME, TO HOME TO HOME, IF IT DOESN'T WORK OUT FOR YOU.

DO YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS KNOW YOU'RE CONSIDERING ADOPTION? CAN YOU AFFORD VET BILLS FOR A WELL BIRD CHECK UP OR IF YOUOR BIRD BECOMES ILL? IF YOU RENT, DOES YOUR LANDLORD ALLOW BIRDS? SO YOU CAN SEE IT IS BEST TO DO YOUR HOME WORK PRIOR TO ADOPTING. IF YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF BIRDS AT ALL, I WILL BE HAPPY TO TRY AND SELECT THE CORRECT BIRD FOR YOUR FAMILY AND LIFESTYLE. (EXAMPLE:YOU DON'T WANT A SCREAMING COCKATOO IN A SMALL APARTMENT OR IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES.) THERE IS A LOT TO CONSIDER WHEN ADOPTIING, SO PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME WHEN ENTERING INTO THIS DECISION.
