As one of the coordinators of  Parrot Haven, a pet bird sanctuary, the rescue division of the Parrot Fanciers’ Club, I come across many different stories about birds in various situations.I thought I would share some of them with our visitors.

All adoptors have to be a member of PFC and must be able to
drive to long island to pick up any Parrot Haven birds. Also, all

11/6/2013*Cats Imagine the surprise Dennis and I received when we opened up 2 boxes that were left on our porch.  Each box was stuffed with a large beautiful cat. There was no note and no funds to help care for them. Click Here to meet Cats



2/2011*Gizmo Gizmo came to Parrot Haven after his secondary owner came to the realization that he wasn’t equipped to handle such a large bird. Click Here to meet Gizmo



11/3/12*Homer A few days after Hurricane Sandy, I received a call from a frantic woman who was concerned that her son’s bird would freeze to death, after his home lost power. Click Here to meet Homer



11/2/12*Jude Jude came to Parrot Haven after Hurricane Sandy, when power went out for 2 weeks in his Hicksville home.   So Jude moved in with his Dad until power came back on about 2 weeks later. Click Here to meet Jude



11/8/13*Kiki I received a call from a gentleman named Tony,  who informed me that he had rescued a bird  from his roof. After some research, he determined the bird to be a pineapple conure, a type that I hadn’t known to exist. Click Here to meet Kiki



11/3/13*Benny One day after work, I was driving down Central Avenue in Hicksville,  an extremely busy 4 lane road, when I saw this tiny kitten, approximately 4-5 weeks old, running under the cars, that were traveling at high speeds.Click Here to meet Kitty



7/13/13*Parrothead Parrothead came into Parrot Haven after his Dad was forced to give him up because of medical problems.  Parrothead is the perfect bird Click Here to meet Parrothead  



2001*Chuckie Cherryheaded Conure -A very plucked cherry head conure needed to be placed immediately after all calls to try and place this bird had been unsuccessful. I guess everyone wants a fully feathered, friendly talking bird.Click Here to meet Chuckie



2000*Coco Medium Sulphur Crested Cockatoo- I came home from work one day to find this medium sulphur crested cockatoo in a cage, in my dining room, with a hugh, gaping infected wound in his chest.Click Here to meet Coco



2002*Mimi  Blue Fronted Amazon- Mimi was found sitting on the front porch of a local home and taken to the Parrot Haven by members of our Parrot Recovery team, Steve & Sally. Click Here to meet Mimi



2000*Dovey & the Pigeon  A Dove and A Pigeon- I received a call from a wildlife rehabilitator, located in Westchester County, last December, who needed to place a cockatiel and a pigeon. I usually would not take in a pigeon, but I know of a local breeder, who agreed to take the pigeon, so I said I would place him. The dove was a surprise.Click Here to meet Dovey & the Pigeon



2005*The Quaker  A Quaker- The unnamed Quaker was only in residence of the Parrot Haven for a few days. His owner gave him up since she had too many birds.Click Here to meet the Quaker



2001*Mikie  The Meyer- Meyer was bought to my house in a paper bag. He had been found in someone's yard, who had no idea how to take care of a parrot, knew we had birds, and dropped him off. Click Here to meet Mike



2002*Chevy  A Parakeet- Chevy was found, full of grease, in the bay of a Chevrolet dealership. Click Here to meet Chevy



2002*Baby  A Parakeet- I have never been so taken in by a birds' plight as I was with Baby. He was found on the shelf of a local pet store, wrapped in a paper bag.Click Here to meet Baby



2001*Kelly & a Lovebird Timneh Grey & a Lovebird- Kelly came into the Parrot Haven, along with a lovebird, just before Christmas. His owner had severe allergies.Click Here to meet Kelly & the Lovebird



2002*Lovebird family  6 Lovebirds- The Parrot Haven received a call last week concerning six lovebirds who needed homes.Click Here to meet the Lovebird Family



2001*Beakless  B&G Macaw- It was about 1PM and an unmarked police car pulled up to my driveway. An officer of the Suffolk County Police Department had stopped by to advise us that a macaw was on the loose. He had stopped by our house since it is known in the community that we have several parrots and are part of the Parrot Fanciers' Club.Click Here to meet Beakless



2001*Pablo Goffins- Pablo is about 4 years old. He/she came into the parrot haven in April & is currently looking for someone to adopt him/her.Click Here to meet Pablo

7/2000*Rescue  Shamrock Macaw- Rescue spent about 4 years locked in a crate in a basement, before being placed in the greenhouse, where he and his fellow mates were fed sporadically. Click Here to meet Rescue  ,July 10, 2000



7/2000*PepeBlue Fronted Amazon- Pepe weighed in at 465 grams, a good size considering he was only fed sporadically at the nursery. He dove right into a bowl of blueberries and cheese. 1/2001*Toby  Spectacled Amazon- Toby is a spectacled amazon, imported from Ohio. Her owner wanted Toby in the Parrot Haven and was willing to drive to NY to place him.Click Here to meet Toby, January 06, 2001



3/2001*Baby Red Crowned Amazon- Baby is a 13-year-old red crowned amazon, who was paralyzed when he fell off his perch last year. He had been totally paralyzed but most of his movement has returned with the exception of his being able to grip his feet Click Here to meet Baby, March 10, 2001



3/2001*Julio Iglesias  Moluccan Cockatoo- Woman who needed to place her beloved moluccan when it was discovered that she was allergic to her baby. 6/2002*Paulie  Blue Crown Conure- I got a call several hours later that the bird had been captured. By the time I got there, he had escaped from a gap in the bars.
